Lakeside Apartments Residents Dive Into Books With Summer Reading Program
With August now upon us, a new school semester is just around the corner! At Lakeside Apartments in San Leandro, residents continue their learning-filled summer with a Summer Reading Program led by their active PSCDC Resident Services Coordinator, Haydee Pelayo Nuño. Following the success and popularity of this year's Summer Science Camp, the Summer Reading Program tackles two other key subjects: literature and writing.
"The goal was to get school-aged residents ready to go back to school this Fall and to promote reading and spend less time on TV, video games, and cell phones," Haydee states. "The program was also requested by parents, and they are happy that their kids are taking a break from technology and spending more time reading and writing."
Kids are encouraged to bring their own books that they want to read from home, or pick out a book from the community room. Once everyone is settled, Haydee sets up a timer for 15 minutes of quiet reading session that lets kids get immersed into their books. While the kids read, Haydee grabs their reading journals. Depending on the resident's writing levels, they have the option to write or color one of their favorite parts from that day's reading. Two residents also kindly volunteered to help the younger children with their reading and writing. After completing their reading time, the kids are rewarded with some computer time in the community's computer lab.
PSCDC Resident Services Coordinators aren't only helping the children prepare to go back to school, but helping parents as well. In select PSCDC properties across California, our Resident Services Coordinators are assisting parents with their back-to-school preparations through school supply giveaways! Some residents will receive essential supplies including pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, and more while supplies last. During this time of year, After School Programs in many of our communities are now accepting registrations. Residents can get the help they need with homework tutoring and continue to make learning enjoyable with educational games and activities free of charge.
While Haydee is currently focusing on getting residents ready to go back to school, she's also making plans for the upcoming fall season. In September, she is planning a community bake sale to help raise money for Lakeside's popular and heavily attended annual pumpkin patch event.
