Census 2020: Shape Your Future

With the start of the new decade, the U.S. Census Bureau is currently preparing for the nationwide 2020 Census. Pacific Southwest Community Development Corporation has partnered with United States Census 2020 to reach out and encourage participation in our communities and other hard to reach communities.

PSCDC is conducting workshops and meetings in conjunction with the 2020 Census team in our San Diego and Imperial County properties. Language, cultural differences, and other barriers, create a misrepresentation in hard to reach communities during the Census and PSCDC's involvement can result in more accurate numbers. Along with informing residents about the Census, PSCDC Resident Services Coordinators in San Diego and Imperial will also assist residents in completion, or start, of their census form. Furthermore, PSCDC Resident Services Coordinators are informing residents and helping them apply for 2020 Census jobs. Currently, our collaboration with the 2020 Census team has already begun, and Resident Services Coordinators in Imperial Valley have now started to conduct an outreach effort together with grass-root organizations.

The impact of the 2020 Census will only benefit PSCDC communities but all communities throughout California. Results from the 2020 Census can influence crucial resources like:

  • Building better roads and schools

  • Funding community programs for seniors, children, and families

  • Creating jobs

  • Affordable housing supply

There are multiple ways for California residents to complete the 2020 Census to make things easier and more convenient. For the first time, the Census form will be available to complete online in 13 languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Tagalog, Polish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Japanese). The Census can also be completed by phone in 13 languages, and limited addresses will receive paper forms that they can mail back. April 1st is Census Day, so don't forget to save the date!

A timeline for the Census:

  • March 12 - 20: Households will begin to receive detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census.

  • April 1: Census Day. Send in your response for your household either online, by phone, or by mail.

  • April: Census takers begin visiting those in group living arrangements. Census takers will begin following up with households that have not yet responded.

  • May - July: Census takers will continue to visit homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to make sure everyone is counted.
